Hence IRDAI has advised the insurance companies to offer renewal of such policies without fail , as the covid insurance is needed in this crucial period , when it's on peak .

NEW NORMS FOR RENEWAL , MIGRATION AND PORTABILITY OF CORONA POLICIES
14.10.2020 : Now Insurance Regulatory & Development Authority of India ( IRDAI ) has framed norms for Renewal , Migration and Portability of Covid Policies Corona Kavach and Corona Rakshak as follows :
Renewal:
a) ‘Corona Kavach’ and ‘Corona Rakshak’ policies of any tenure may be renewed for further terms of three and half months (3 ½ months), six and half months (6 ½ months) or nine and half months (9 ½ months) as per the option exercised by the policyholder. The renewal shall be subject to the underwriting policy of the insurer.
b) Renewals, if any, may be done before the expiry of the existing policy contract.
c) Where policy is renewed, additional waiting period of 15 days shall not be imposed and the coverage shall be continued seamlessly.
d) During renewal, sum insured may be allowed to be changed by the policyholder. For any increase in the sum insured, the waiting period shall start afresh only for the enhanced portion of the sum insured.
e) Corona Kavach and Corona Rakshak policies are permitted to be renewed till 31st March,2021
Migration:
a) In respect of Corona Kavach individual policies, insurers have the choice to offer migration to any other indemnity based health insurance product offered by them as per the option exercised by the policyholder.
b) In respect of Corona Kavach Group policies, insurers have the choice to provide migration to the members insured to any other individual indemnity based health policy at the point of exit of the member insured from the group policy or the cessation of coverage of the underlying group policy.
c) Where migration is allowed, the accrued gains of waiting period served in the existing Corona Kavach policy (Individual/Group) shall be protected in respect of coverage for Covid-19, in the migrated policy.
Portability:
General and Health Insurers are permitted to allow portability of Corona Kavach (individual) policy from one insurer to another. The accrued gains of waiting period served in the existing Corona Kavach policy shall be protected in respect of coverage of Covid-19, by the porting-in insurer.
Where migration/portability from the Corona Kavach policy (Group/Individual, as applicable) is allowed by the insurers, such migration/portability to any other comprehensive health insurance policy shall be allowed, till the end of policy period of the existing Corona Kavach policy.

Dated 17.07.2020 : Recently various state governments have permitted to build and operate make-shift hospitals or temporary hospitals and operate them in view of surge of covid cases in India and lack of beds in regular hospitals . Now Insurance Regulatory & Development Authority of India ( IRDAI ) has advised the insurance companies to treat claims made under health policies for the hospitalizations in such government permitted temporary or make -shift hospitals as hospitalization in regular hospitals . IRDAI has given following instructions to the insurers :
a) Where a policyholder who is diagnosed as Covid-19 positive is admitted into any such make-shift or temporary hospital on the advice of a medical practitioner or appropriate Government authorities, notwithstanding the definition of hospital specified in the terms and conditions of policy contract, the treatment costs shall be settled by insurers.
b) Where any network provider has set up any such make-shift or temporary hospital, such make-shift or temporary hospital shall be regarded as the extension of the network provider and cashless facility shall be made available.
Further Insurers are advised to expedite settlement of all such claims in accordance to the applicable regulatory framework.

COVID PATIENTS ARE ELIGIBLE FOR CASHLESS HOSPITALIZATION : IRDA
Dated 16.07.2020 : If you are having a health insurance which allows hospitalization charges with cashless facility , hospitals should provide you with the same cashless facility in case you are admitted on account of Covid-19 also . The issue has been clarified by IRDAI vide their press release dated 14.07.2020
Insurance Regulatory & Development Authority of India ( IRDAI ) has received complaints from General public regarding refusal of cash-less facilities by some hospitals and hence the authority has issued the clarification . As per press release , "general and health insurance companies are expected to enter into agreements with public and private sector healthcare providers across the geographical spread. The list of the network providers (hospitals) with whom the insurance company has entered into a service level agreement shall be published in the websites of the insurers and TPAs (Third Party Administrators). Where such service level agreements (SLA) are entered with the Network Providers (hospitals), it is essential for all such hospitals to provide cashless facility for any treatment to the policyholders including Covid-19 treatment in accordance with agreed provisions of SLA and terms and conditions of policy contract. "

Corona pandemic is spreading speedily in various parts of the country and the daily additions now is around 18,000 per day . The cost of treatment covid -19 is also escalating in private hospitals . Though each state government is fixing the maximum charges a hospital can charge for beds , ICU , ventilators and other charges , the total cost for covid-19 management will be daunting even to the middle class families . Hence more people are covering themselves and their families with health insurance . A recent report suggests spike in premium collection for health insurance in recent months .
Now in order to bring a standard short term insurance covering Covid -19 , Insurance Regulatory & Development Authority of India ( IRDAI ) has come out now with two new schemes covering Corona which are to be mandatorily issued by all insurance companies licensed to issue health policies . The policy with basic cover of indemnity is called CORONA KAVACH POLICY . Though Plan will have common features , premiums can be decided by individual insurance companies . The other policy CORONA RAKSHAK POLICY provides lump sum cash on diagnosis of covid and hospitalization .
The prime objective of the policies is to provide basic health insurance for general public with transparent common features in case one faces Covid -19 .
The policy will be issued by 10th, July , 2020 by all the general / health insurers .

Dated 23.06.2020 : In view of the present scenario in the wake of spread of pandemic COVID-19 and need for specific policy , Insurance Regulatory & Development Authority of India ( IRDAI ) has today permitted insurance companies to issue COVID – 19 specific short term health insurance policies subject to these guidelines. :
1. Short term health insurance policies are permitted to be devised offering health insurance cover specific to only COVID-19 which can be offered both as individual or group products. They can be issued for a minimum term of three months to a maximum term of eleven months. In between three months and eleven months, the policy term shall be in multiples of completed months. A policy term less than three months is not permitted.
2. If the term of policy is fixed as 12 months, the same is not considered as short term health policy.

Following are the guidelines issued by IRDAI on 04.03.2020 :

i) Where hospitalization is covered in a product, insurers shall ensure that the cases related to Corona virus disease (COVID-19) shall be expeditiously handled.
ii) The costs of admissible medical expenses during the course of treatment including the treatment during quarantine period shall be settled in accordance to the applicable terms and conditions of policy contract and the extant regulatory framework.
iii) All the claims reported under COVID 19 shall be thoroughly reviewed by the claims review committee before repudiating the claims.
In order to provide need based health insurance coverage, insurers are introducing products for various specific diseases including vector borne diseases. For the purpose of meeting health insurance requirements of various sections, insurers are advised to design products covering the costs of treatment for Corona Virus. "
